July 28th is World Hepatitis Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about viral hepatitis. In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) made World Hepatitis Day one of only 4 official disease-specific world health days, to be celebrated each year. Viral hepatitis affects over half a million Canadians and over 500 million people worldwide. Many Canadians are unaware that they have the virus and unknowingly spread the virus to other people.
To show our support on World Hepatitis Day at AIDS New Brunswick, we host a community BBQ in partnership with the Fredericton Downtown Community Health Clinic. People from all walks of life can join us in the Victoria Health Center courtyard where we provide a BBQ lunch, and also have a wide array of resources and info pamphlets related to hepatitis. Our goal is to raise awareness about World Hepatitis Day and to also stress the importance of getting tested and knowing your status.
